With Terra gone home for a few hours to have dinner with Tommy, Adrianna sat in the hospital alone with her daughter, forcing her eyes to remain dry and her heart to keep beating. She fingered her phone, willing it to ring, but nothing happened. Tomorrow, as soon as they were out of this place, she would call her lawyer and see what she needed to do to start proceedings for a divorce.

There was a knock at the door, and her hopes rose for one moment, but she doubted it was John. “Come in,” she called quietly, not wanting to wake her sleeping child. She figured it was a nurse or technician, coming to check vitals for the millionth time today, and when Tyrese stepped into the room, her mouth went dry. He was the last person she expected to see here.

“Tyrese?”

He gave her an encouraging smile. “Hey, Adrianna. I wanted to come check on you and the little girl. You sounded terrible on the phone, and I thought maybe you could use some cheering up.” He held out a tiny pink teddy bear. “I brought this for Jordan. That’s her name, right?”

Adrianna nodded, taking it from him in surprise. “Thank you, Tyrese. You didn’t have to do this.”

He shrugged. “I don’t have a lot, but I try to be generous. I know I wouldn’t want someone to barge into my daughter’s hospital room without something for her, especially if that someone wasn’t exactly on my list of friends at the time.” He hung his head. “I’ve got a lot to make up for and a lot to prove to you if I expect you to trust me. I thought I could start now.”

She smiled gratefully. While Tyrese certainly wasn’t her first choice of visitors, she was grateful not to be alone right now. “That’s very sweet of you. She’s going to love it.”

But Tyrese wasn’t looking at her. He was looking around the room with a frown. “Did your husband go grab something for you to eat? I was hoping to meet him.”

Adrianna stiffened, not sure she wanted to answer his question. At the same time, at the moment, it was a relief John wasn’t here; she didn’t think it was a good idea for him and Tyrese to come face to face. “He’s not here. He’s out of town.”

The shocked expression on Tyrese’s face said it all. If he was surprised about John not being here, with all his lack of propriety, then something was seriously wrong. “It must be some really important business, then. I can’t imagine being somewhere else if it was my kid in the hospital.” He gazed at Jordan, and there was a look of longing on his face. “I doubt I’ll ever be lucky enough to have one. I’m telling you, Adrianna, she’s gorgeous. She looks just like you.”

Blushing, Adrianna turned away from him. “Thank you.”

“You know, you said you had something you wanted to ask me. It sounded important, and you seem pretty upset.
